Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

Romaine, Green Leaf, Red Leaf and Boston Bibb lettuce; root crops, berries, fresh herbs and preserves are a sampling of the locally-produced, fresh items offered at Mark's Market, a Wooddale-based business that is celebrating its official opening today. The Federal and Provincial Governments have invested $172,500 to help expand the local farmers market in order to boost the economy and strengthen the Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture industry.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will attend the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services Annual Conference and Trade Show in Corner Brook this weekend. The conference will take place at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, 1 Canada Games Drive, beginning tomorrow (Friday, August 26).

Preparations continue for the first annual Premier’s Forum on Local Government, to be held in St. John’s on October 5 in conjunction with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) and the Combined Councils of Labrador (CCL). The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will host the forum, which will focus on priority issues of common interest to municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, announced that Newfoundland and Labrador's 2016 independent resource assessment covering the area of the West Orphan Basin has identified 25.5 billion barrels of oil and 20.6 trillion cubic feet of gas potential.

A company has been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations arising from a roofing incident that occurred in Bay Roberts on October 6, 2014. The incident involved two employees who suffered fatal injuries, and three others who suffered various injuries resulting from an electrical contact. The investigation was conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of Service NL.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, attended the Energy and Mines Ministers' Conference in Winnipeg, August 22 to 23, to discuss strengthening of public confidence in natural resource sectors. During the event Minister Coady spoke on energy and mines issues important to Newfoundland and Labrador including the development of diverse sources of energy generation, investment in public geoscience in mining and energy transmission.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will release the findings of the 2016 Independent Oil and Gas Resource Assessment today (Wednesday, August 24). The event will take place in the East Block lobby of the Confederation Building, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Premier will be joined by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources; Jim Keating, Executive VP of Corporate Services and Offshore Development, Nalcor Energy; and Pierre-Yves Chenet, Chief Technical Officer, Beicip Franlab.

Service NL announced today that McCurdy Ready Mix Limited has been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to an incident that occurred in July of 2014. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The week-long Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games wrapped up this past weekend in Conception Bay South (CBS). The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, attended the closing ceremonies on Saturday evening.

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods wishes to advise that the location for the public meeting on the five-year forest management operating plan for District 22 on Thursday, August 25, has changed to the Northern Inn and Suites, 700 Nichols-Adams Highway. The times remain the same at 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, announced today that the House of Assembly Management Commission will hold its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will attend the Energy and Mines Ministers' Conference (EMMC), in Winnipeg, Manitoba, August 22-23. The conference is being co-hosted by the Government of Manitoba and the Government of Canada.

Premier Ball was joined by Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, and Graham Letto, MHA for Labrador West.
