Atlantic ministers of education, post-secondary education and training revealed actions to support mental health, and career development and transition today in St. John’s. The Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET) meeting was hosted by the Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will address participants at the Provincial School Food Gathering tomorrow (Thursday, September 22). The event begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network, 77 Charter Ave. in St. John’s

Children, Seniors and Social Development

Anglican Homes Inc. officially opened The Babb Manor today in St. John’s, a new 24-unit affordable housing development for seniors. Fifteen of the building’s units were jointly funded by the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement. Programming and services space was funded through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) Provincial Homelessness Fund.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will speak at Off the Beaten Path: Discovering Your Way in the Craft Industry, tomorrow (Thursday, September 22). The event is being held at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre, in Conception Bay South, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Bernard Coffey, QC, as Clerk of the Executive Council, effective immediately.

For the 11th year in a row, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) is joining with other information and privacy commissioners from across the country in celebrating national Right to Know (RTK) Week from September 26 to 30.

Executive Council

In recognition of the achievements of Paralympic Gold medallist, Katarina Roxon, the Provincial Government is naming Route 490 Roxon Way. The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, made the announcement today at an event at Confederation Building to acknowledge the success of Ms. Roxon at the Rio 2016 Paralympics Games.

Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

To commemorate National Tree Day, the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, will attend a tree planting ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday, September 21) at 12:00 p.m. at Margaret Bowater Park in Corner Brook.

Justice and Public Safety

The Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission would like to advise the public that nominations are now open for the second annual Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award. This award will recognize an individual who has made and/or continues to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in the province.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and John Finn, MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, will host an event tomorrow (September 20) to welcome home Katarina Roxon and celebrate her gold medal win at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The Department of Finance today launched a website aimed at better informing and establishing relationships with potential investors. This website includes information for potential investors in an effort to support the province’s borrowing requirements, as well as providing transparent information about the province’s borrowings.

The Provincial Government continues to work closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association (NLOA) to grow the outfitting sector and to effectively market the variety of hunting and angling package experiences available in the province.

Investigations conducted by Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers have resulted in recent convictions for various offenses in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development: Research and Development Corporation

The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is now accepting applications for the 2017 Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards competition. RISE Awards provide Level II high school students in Newfoundland and Labrador with the opportunity to attend research-related enrichment programs in Canada and the United States. The awards are open to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who will be completing Level II by June 2017.

Executive Council

The British High Commission – as a gift to Newfoundland and Labrador – are presenting a free public screening of the remastered 1916 film The Battle of the Somme along with a live performance of Laura Rossi's 2006 accompanying score, performed by the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber Orchestra. This is the first and only time this film is being shown in Canada.

Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

The Provincial Government is joining with the aquaculture industry to mark September 18 – 24 as Aquaculture Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, kicked off the celebrations at the opening ceremonies of the Aquaculture Canada and Cold Harvest Conference this morning in St. John’s.
