Recognizing the importance of supporting this industry the 40th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival and the 16th annual Tuckamore Festival received operational grants from the Provincial Government.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will join Terra Nova MHA Colin Holloway, to highlight important infrastructure investments under the cost-shared Clean Water and Wastewater Fund in Happy Adventure and Sandringham tomorrow (Wednesday, August 10).

The Battle Harbour, which is being developed as one of Labrador's key cultural tourism attractions, received a boost today to help continue efforts to market and transform it into a premiere tourism destination. Yvonne Jones, Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, provincial Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, announced a combined contribution of more than $100,000 for Battle Harbour Historic Trust Inc. to support the initiative.

The bridge spanning the Exploits River behind the former paper mill property in Grand Falls-Windsor will be closed for one week to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic beginning Monday, August 15, at 7:00 a.m. until Sunday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m.

The Provincial Government has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the renovation and extension of St. Peter’s Primary in Mount Pearl. The RFP is one of several projects planned to address school capacity and revitalize school infrastructure, which supports government’s goal of meeting the needs of today’s students and educators.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Department of Advanced Education and Skills is holding roundtables in August to provide residents of the province with an opportunity to participate in the development of a new immigration strategy. The strategy will help address Newfoundland and Labrador’s demographic and labour needs and attract economic investment.

An online public consultation session to inform the development of a new provincial climate change strategy is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday, August 10) presented via an online, interactive format beginning at 1:30 p.m.

During an event in the Town of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador, on Saturday, the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Member of Parliament for Bonavista - Burin - Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced close to $585,000 through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund for two projects.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, will attend a meeting of Atlantic environment ministers tomorrow (Tuesday, August 9) at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, 1055 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Atlantic ministers will be joined by the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In our most recent reporting period (March 1-June, 30, 2016), the OIPC received 66 privacy breach reports from 19 public bodies. This is up from the 51 reports from 19 public bodies received in the third quarter of mandatory breach reporting.

The Fortune Port Corporation is working on a Downtown Development Plan that will better prepare the Town of Fortune for an increase in traffic when year-round ferry service to the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon is in place.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will speak at the opening of the 40th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival today (Friday, August 5). The opening takes place at Bannerman Park, St. John’s, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Colin Holloway, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in Fortune tomorrow (Friday, August 5) to make a joint federal-provincial funding announcement for the Fortune Port Corporation. The event takes place at the Fortune Head Geology Centre, 49-51 Bunker Hill Road, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, today commended the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Society for the major emphasis placed on accessibility for the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. The 40th annual festival is being held August 5-7 in Bannerman Park, St. John's.

A new motorcycle licence plate for military veterans was unveiled today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier Ball unveiled the new licence plate design at the Royal Canadian Legion War Memorial in Conception Bay South.

Transportation and Works

Several road maintenance and rehabilitation projects are in progress or nearing completion throughout the western region this construction season. The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, is on the west coast this week visiting several projects with area Members of the House of Assembly.
