Justice and Public Safety

A collaborative effort between the Department of Justice and Public Safety and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) will see training of recruits under the Correctional Officer Recruit Training (CORT) program take place at the RNC Memorial Campus in St. John's. The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, joined RNC Chief Bill Janes and Superintendent of Prisons, Owen Brophy, to welcome the new recruits who are beginning their training today.

Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

The date for the public meeting on the five-year forest management operating plan for Districts 9 and 16 has been changed to Tuesday, September 13. The meeting location and time remains the same at Springdale Tourist Chalet, Springdale Junction, 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, will attend a ceremony to recognize Able Seaman Leander Green on Sunday, September 11 beginning at 11:00 a.m. The event is taking place at Sunnyside Lions Community Centre, Sunnyside.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today reminded residents and visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador that the general seasons for big game hunting in the central and western management zones of the island and Labrador open on Saturday, September 10. General seasons for the eastern region big game zones will open on October 1.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will participate in the launch of a new collaborative initiative for the Correctional Officer Recruit Training (CORT) program Monday, September 12 at 8:30 a.m. The event will take place at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Memorial Campus on Parade Street, St. John’s. Minister Parsons will be joined by Chief Bill Janes of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and Owen Brophy, the province’s Superintendent of Prisons.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced investments in two Burin Peninsula cultural tourism facilities and an arena during an event at St. Gabriel’s Hall in Marystown. The Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), along with Mark Browne, MHA for Placentia West-Bellevue on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, announced funding for projects with the Marystown Heritage Museum Corporation, the Little Bay Heritage Centre, and the Kaetlyn Osmond arena.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in St. Anthony tomorrow (Saturday, September 10) to announce funding for St. Anthony Basin Resources Incorporated (SABRI) to be used for tourism initiatives on the Northern Peninsula. Minister Mitchelmore will be joined by MP Gudie Hutchings on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

Health and Community Services

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the opening of the Pharmacists’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador’s (PANL) annual conference tonight (Friday, September 9) at 7:00 p.m. The event will take place in Salon CD at the Delta St. John’s Hotel and Conference Centre.

Finance

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today provided an update on collective bargaining with the province’s public sector employees. The Provincial Government has formally invited unions to commence collective bargaining. Invitations have been extended to the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to commence collective bargaining this month. Bargaining schedules with other unions will be arranged over the coming weeks.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will participate in the official re-opening of the Lamaline Community Centre tomorrow (Friday, September 9), beginning at 12:00 noon.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that Evelyn Lewis of St. John’s is the provincial recipient of the 2016 Council of the Federation Literacy Award for her achievements in literacy. Ms. Lewis is one of 14 recipients throughout Canada to receive the distinguished award. September 8 also marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Octagon Pond Elementary School is ready to open its doors and welcome students for the new school year. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, toured the new facility today together with Darrin Pike, CEO/Director of Education, and Milton Peach, Chair, as well as other representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in attendance for the St. John’s opening of the Peace by Piece quilt exhibit. The event beings today (Thursday, September 8), at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Hall, St. John’s City Hall, 10 New Gower Street.

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) in partnership with the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board (NorPen) today announced the launch of a residential curbside composting pilot project with approximately 900 households in sub-region four in the Northern Peninsula waste management region. Organic waste collection will commence on September 27, 2016, and participation is voluntary.
