Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

Conservation officers with the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, Forest Service Branch, seized an all-terrain vehicle and a dirt bike earlier this month while patrolling in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area. Officers also issued seven tickets under the Motorized Snow Vehicle and All-Terrain Vehicles Act for violations of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use along roadways.

This morning the harvest of the province’s first 30-acre canola field took place in Pasadena. The province’s first canola crop will help inform future activities and contribute to an increasingly innovative agriculture industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The new Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge was officially opened today in a ceremony marking the first crossing of vehicles and vessels.

Health and Community Services

The All-Party Committee on Mental Health and Addictions will be visiting communities in Labrador early next week. The committee will hold meetings in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Nain and Sheshatshiu to hear from local government officials, residents and community agencies.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will hold a news conference today regarding the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry respecting the death of Mr. Donald Dunphy. The news conference will take place at 12:00 noon at the Media Centre, East Block, Confederation Building.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will be in Gander tomorrow (Friday, September 23) to speak at the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Co-operatives Annual General Meeting. The meeting will take place at Hotel Gander (Salon A), beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, will view the harvest of the province’s first canola field tomorrow (Friday, September 23) beginning 11:00 a.m. at the canola field in Pasadena. Minister Crocker will be joined by Scott Reid, MHA for St. George’s-Humber.

The Council of Atlantic Ministers of Education and Training (CAMET) meeting was hosted by the Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour.

Anglican Homes Inc. officially opened The Babb Manor today in St. John’s, a new 24-unit affordable housing development for seniors. Fifteen of the building’s units were jointly funded by the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement. Programming and services space was funded through Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s (NLHC) Provincial Homelessness Fund.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, made the announcement today at an event at Confederation Building to acknowledge the success of Ms. Roxon at the Rio 2016 Paralympics Games.
