Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

The Information and Privacy Commissioner, Donovan Molloy, has released his Report A-2016-018 under authority of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A summary of the report is included below.

Justice and Public Safety

The Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission would like to advise the public that nominations are now open for the second annual Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Award. This award will recognize an individual who has made and/or continues to make a meaningful contribution to advancing and furthering human rights in the province.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and John Finn, MHA for Stephenville-Port au Port, will host an event tomorrow (September 20) to welcome home Katarina Roxon and celebrate her gold medal win at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour has revised dates and times for Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy consultations in St. Anthony and Labrador West. A full schedule can be found below.

Finance

The Department of Finance today launched a website aimed at better informing and establishing relationships with potential investors. This website includes information for potential investors in an effort to support the province’s borrowing requirements, as well as providing transparent information about the province’s borrowings.

The Provincial Government continues to work closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association (NLOA) to grow the outfitting sector and to effectively market the variety of hunting and angling package experiences available in the province.

Investigations conducted by Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers have resulted in recent convictions for various offenses in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development: Research and Development Corporation

The Research & Development Corporation (RDC) is now accepting applications for the 2017 Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards competition. RISE Awards provide Level II high school students in Newfoundland and Labrador with the opportunity to attend research-related enrichment programs in Canada and the United States. The awards are open to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who will be completing Level II by June 2017.

Executive Council

The British High Commission – as a gift to Newfoundland and Labrador – are presenting a free public screening of the remastered 1916 film The Battle of the Somme along with a live performance of Laura Rossi's 2006 accompanying score, performed by the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber Orchestra. This is the first and only time this film is being shown in Canada.

Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

The Provincial Government is joining with the aquaculture industry to mark September 18 – 24 as Aquaculture Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, kicked off the celebrations at the opening ceremonies of the Aquaculture Canada and Cold Harvest Conference this morning in St. John’s.

Over $1.8 million approved through the Seafood Innovation and Transition program will help transition Newfoundland and Labrador towards a groundfish-based seafood industry. The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods, announced the projects today at the Aquaculture Canada and Cold Harvest conference in St. John’s.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s tourism marketing efforts have been nominated for two top marketing awards presented by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada. The province’s Find Yourself marketing campaign is a finalist for the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts Marketing Campaign of the Year Award. In addition, the innovative Paint the Town Contest launched in May of this year is a finalist for the WestJet Social Media/Digital Marketing Initiative of the Year Award.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour is currently holding provincial consultations to ensure stakeholders have an opportunity to provide input on what they feel is currently working with the Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy program and equally, what changes or modifications they would view as necessary given the current and future labour market demands for skilled trades.

Tree planting ceremonies, Explore Forestry Day and a charity golf tournament are among the activities planned to mark National Forest Week, September 18-24, an annual event celebrating one of Canada’s greatest natural resources.

Executive Council

Ending violence against women and girls, reducing the gender wage gap, and enhancing the use of Gender-based Analysis in decision-making, were among the key issues discussed on September 14-15 as federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) ministers responsible for the status of women met in Edmonton. The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board represented the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador at the meeting.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, will bring greetings on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador at the grand re-opening of Bartlett’s Point Park in Corner Brook, on Monday, September 19.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Public Health Agency of Canada to support the development of a National Autism Surveillance System. The agreement will allow for the sharing of information provincially and nationally to help improve the lives of those living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Provincial Government has proclaimed the second Sunday after Labour Day as Terry Fox Day, coinciding with the annual run in his honour. This year, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Terry Fox Day will be celebrated Sunday, September 18.
