Municipal Affairs

The Department of Municipal Affairs, Fire and Emergency Services encourages all communities and residents to be prepared for flooding, power outages, and other potential impacts of heavy rainfall forecast for Newfoundland and Labrador over the next 24 hours.

Health and Community Services

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurse Practitioner Association (NLNPA) 2016 Conference tomorrow (Saturday, October 8). The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Medical Education Centre Atrium at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, will make a joint social infrastructure funding announcement on Tuesday, October 11. Premier Ball and Minister Foote will be joined by the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation.

The Department of Municipal Affairs, Fire and Emergency Services reminds residents that October 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

The Miguel Lake Forest Access Road will be closed to vehicle traffic for part of Sunday, October 9, for bridge repairs which are expected to be completed by early afternoon. The road is located off the Bay d’Espoir Highway, approximately 37 kilometres south from the Trans-Canada Highway.

On Tuesday, October 11, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will engage representatives from the business, community, labour and arts sectors at The Way Forward: Shaping Our Future to discuss its long-term approach to fostering success and innovation in the province.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced more than $1.5 million in project approvals for Linkages, a career and employment program to help young people succeed in Newfoundland and Labrador. More than $25 million of Federal Government and Memorial University funding will be invested at Memorial’s Battery Facility in a redevelopment project as part of the recently-signed Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund. The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, made the announcement today at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, today joined Amanda Dean, Vice President Atlantic, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), and representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services (NLAFS) and the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department, to announce the fifth phase of the Alarmed and Ready Fire Safety Campaign.

Natural Resources

Future prospectors have completed an intensive two weeks of training through the Prospectors Training Course offered by the Provincial Government and College of the North Atlantic. The course took place at the Bay St. George campus in Stephenville.

The Southern Lake Forest Access Road will be closed to vehicle traffic from Friday, October 7, to Saturday, October 8, for bridge repair. The road is located approximately 9.3 kilometres from Point Leamington on Route 350.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at an announcement of a federal investment in Memorial University infrastructure tomorrow (Friday, October 7). The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. in Classroom A-1043, Arts and Administration Building, Memorial University.

Investigations conducted by the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety have resulted in multiple convictions at Provincial Court in Gander.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, hosted the inaugural Premier’s Forum on Local Government today in St. John’s. The forum featured discussion between community leaders and the Premier on issues of concern to their municipalities in their respective regions that they represented. The forum was held in conjunction with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and the Combined Councils of Labrador.
