Environment and Conservation

The annual big game licence draw for moose and caribou for the 2016-17 hunting season is now complete and notifications are being mailed to all applicants. Notices for successful applicants will be mailed first, followed by notices for unsuccessful applicants.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will address the opening ceremony of the Avalon Telus Motorcycle Ride for Dad tomorrow (Saturday, June 18). The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Newfoundland Power parking lot, 55 Kenmount Road, St. John's.

Environment and Conservation

Three local plant species have gained special protection under the Provincial Government’s Endangered Species Act. The Mountain Bladder Fern, the Northern Twayblade and the Fernald’s Braya have been added to the Endangered Species List on the recommendation of the Species Status Advisory Committee (SSAC) and the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).

Municipal Affairs

The Provincial Government is now accepting applications from not-for-profit organizations and local governments that wish to sponsor projects funded by the Community Enhancement and Employment Program (CEEP).

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minster of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, today announced the 2016 Seniors of Distinction Award recipients. The Seniors of Distinction Awards program was designed to identify and celebrate the contributions, achievements and diversity of older persons throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

On June 15, the City of St. John’s, in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, officially opened the newly redeveloped St. John’s Convention Centre, following an expansion valued at approximately $70 million. The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the official re-opening of the convention centre.

Today, the Provincial Government announced enhancements to the Inclusion Program, a voluntary option for eligible child care services to support the inclusion of all children in regular child care programming. The changes will come into effect in the fall of 2016.
