Children, Seniors and Social Development

The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador have invested in transitional and supportive housing for youth in Southwestern Newfoundland. Supported by the Community Education Network (CEN), the Collaborative Foundations Youth Homelessness Initiative will focus on the provision of transitional and supportive housing and wrap-around services for at-risk and homeless youth ages 18 to 30. Located in Stephenville, the initiative will be able to assist up to eight homeless youth.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize May 28 to June 3 as Early Childhood Educators’ Week. It was a pleasure to join members of the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Newfoundland and Labrador earlier today to sign the official proclamation.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to acknowledge the efforts of those who responded to the serious situation in Mud Lake over the past few weeks and also to recognize the efforts that are still underway to assist residents in getting their lives back together.

Tourism Awareness Week is being celebrated across Canada from May 28 to June 3. Throughout this week, national and provincial tourism industry leaders are working to promote the profile of the tourism industry as a long-term solution for local economies.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government, the City of St. John’s, Eastern Health and local community outreach organizations are partnering to educate the public about fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths. The work of the St. John’s Community Action Group on Fentanyl will begin this summer with pop-up tents promoting education and awareness about the opioid Fentanyl, the overdose antidote Naloxone, harm reduction, stigma reduction, and addiction treatment services.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Husky Energy today announced that Husky Energy, as operator, is moving forward with the West White Rose project offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. First oil is expected in 2022 with direct employment, business and other industrial benefits provided to the province totalling more than $3 billion in provincial royalties, equity, and taxes.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will make an important oil and gas industry announcement today Monday, May 29. The event will take place at Level Three Atrium, The Rooms, Bonaventure Avenue, St. John’s at 10:00 a.m.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has accepted a proposal from Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited (CBPPL) that will secure the future of the company’s pension plans, while allowing the company to focus its financial resources on maintaining the viability of its operations.

The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. at 10 Tennessee Drive, Stephenville. Minister Gambin-Walsh will be joined by John Finn, MHA for Stephenville - Port au Port.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Service NL, and the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment and MHA for Humber-Bay of Islands, will hold a news conference on Sunday, May 28, to discuss funding of the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. pension plans.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, today hosted a meeting of federal, provincial, and territorial ministers responsible for emergency management in St. John’s. Ministers discussed how disasters pose an increasing threat to the safety and economic stability of communities and businesses and agreed to continue to work together on longer-term solutions to sustainable disaster recovery. These solutions include moving towards a more balanced approach to emergency management and focusing on disaster prevention and mitigation; this includes flooding in Atlantic Canada such as recent events in Mud Lake.

Today, Betty Parsley, MHA for Harbour Main, on behalf of the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, was joined by Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure, and Steve Tessier, Mayor of the Town of Conception Bay South, to announce funding to upgrade the Conception Bay South water and sewer system.

Investigations conducted by officers with Fish and Wildlife Enforcement with the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources have resulted in recent convictions in Gander Provincial Court.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, was at Northern Harvest Smolt Ltd. in Stephenville today to announce $396,551 under the Labour Market Partnership Program for the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association to assist in the development of a human resource plan for the aquaculture industry in our province.
