Justice and Public Safety

The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety:

House of Assembly

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Honourable Tom Osborne, advises that the House of Assembly Management Commission will meet at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

The Department of Transportation and Works (the “Department”) received an access request seeking disclosure of all correspondence between the Provincial Government, two named individuals and the Third Party. The correspondence was identified by the Applicant as “all correspondence and emails exchanged…requesting an increase to the floor space,” at a specific location. The Department was prepared to provide access to the information with only minimal redactions based on section 40 (disclosure harmful to personal privacy), however, the Third Party filed a complaint with this Office objecting to some of the information being released based on section 39 (disclosure harmful to business interests of a third party) and section 31 (disclosure harmful to law enforcement). The Commissioner found that the Third Party was not entitled to rely on section 31 and had not met the test for section 39 and recommended that the information be disclosed.

Industries with growth potential will now work with ministers across government to address development needs via a new Cabinet Committee on Jobs. The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, established the committee today, which will engage industry in joint decision making aimed at stimulating new business activity and creating new private sector jobs for residents throughout the province.

Two new digital service options at Motor Registration Division (MRD) in Mount Pearl are designed to reduce the amount of time people spend waiting in line.

Transportation and Works

A tender valued at over $15.2 million has been awarded to Municipal Construction Ltd. for the completion of the next phase of the Team Gushue Highway.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Service NL, will provide details of the latest service enhancements for customers of the Motor Registration Division (MRD) in Mount Pearl.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will speak at Holy Trinity Elementary’s At My Best Play Day event tomorrow (Tuesday, May 9). The event is scheduled to begin at 9:20 a.m. at the school, 10 Doyle’s and Quigley’s Lane, Torbay.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, today recognized May 7-13 as Emergency Preparedness Week. The 2017 theme is Plan. Prepare. Be Aware.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will provide details about a new Cabinet Committee on Jobs that has been established to support economic development and private sector job creation. The news conference will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, May 9) at 10:30 a.m. in the Media Centre, East Block, Confederation Building.

The event takes place at the Suncor Energy Fluvarium, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Minister Bennett will speak at approximately 8:20 p.m.
