The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development and Derek Bennett, MHA for Lewisporte - Twillingate and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will attend Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador's 45th Annual General Meeting, Conference and Tradeshow this weekend at the Holiday Inn in St. John's.

To support Albertans as they battle the province’s forest fires, 11 fire fighters from the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency will be deployed to Alberta this week as part of a forest fire suppression team. This follows the recent deployment of a government employee to act as International Liaison Officer with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in Winnipeg and another employee travelling to Ontario to assume the role of Logistics Section Chief Trainee.

Fifteen Newfoundland and Labrador high school students will spend this summer at research-related enrichment programs across North America and the Arctic through the Research Inspired Student Enrichment (RISE) Awards announced last night by the Research & Development Corporation (RDC). The awards range in value from $6,500 to $15,000 and are presented to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

More than 100 of the province's top young athletes, representing 26 sports, were recognized yesterday (Tuesday, May 24) by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, during the 12th annual Premier's Athletic Awards. The ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn in St. John's.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Government House Leader, introduced a resolution today in the House of Assembly proposing the names of the individuals who will form the inaugural Independent Appointments Commission. This follows on the passing of Bill 1, which supports the creation of a merit-based appointment process for agencies, boards, and commissions for the first time in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Legislation was introduced in the House of Assembly this week that will allow College of the North Atlantic to offer applied degree programs, which will expand the college's course offerings and enhance its abilities to compete in a global market.

Today the Federal Government, along with the Provincial Government, announced significant funding relief for Newfoundland and Labrador. The Federal Government has deferred the province's payments under the Equalization Repayable Floor Loan. As a result of this relief, the Provincial Government will be making changes to the Temporary Deficit Reduction Levy.

A Provincial Government investment of over $123,000 will help Marble Zip Tours Inc. and Western Newfoundland Brewing Company Ltd, based in the Corner Brook region, build stronger and more dynamic communities and enhance their local economies. The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, toured Marble Zip Line, one of the funding recipients, while in the region last week.
