Six new designations were announced today under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program during a ceremony at The Rooms.

The Provincial Government is helping veterans find rewarding careers and strengthening the provincial labour force by formally recognizing specific training under the Department of National Defence 404 driver's licence as equivalent to a commercial vehicle driver's licence. The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL, announced the initiative today with representatives from the Helmets to Hardhats program, Newfoundland and Labrador Building and Construction Trades Council, and the private sector.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will announce new designations under the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program today (Wednesday, October 14). The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at The Rooms, St. John's.

The Provincial Government has reached a partnership agreement with Sequence Bio to improve health care outcomes and support commercial research and development opportunities in precision medicine. The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by representatives from Sequence Bio and Memorial University, and other community stakeholders today for the announcement.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today offered condolences on behalf of the province to the family of renowned businessman and philanthropist, the late Paul Johnson. Mr. Johnson's significant impact on Newfoundland and Labrador was broad-reaching.

Companies working with interactive digital media can now avail of a new tax credit specially designed to support businesses in this industry. The Newfoundland and Labrador Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Tax Credit was announced as part of Budget 2015: Balancing Choices for a Promising Future. The details of the credit have been finalized and the regulations were implemented this week.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL, will announce a new initiative in collaboration with the Helmets to Hardhats program tomorrow (Wednesday, October 14). The event will take place at the Newfoundland and Labrador Building and Construction Trades Council offices located at 80 Mews Place in St. John's at 10:00 a.m.

To maintain high standards of care and help ensure comfortable living environments for personal care home residents, the Provincial Government has increased the base monthly subsidy rate per subsidized resident for operators across Newfoundland and Labrador through an investment of up to $16.3 million over three years.

The Provincial Government has provided $60,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society-Newfoundland and Labrador for the operation of Practical Support Rooms across the province.

Residents of Bonavista, as well as patients and staff at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Care Centre and Golden Heights Manor, will benefit from an investment of approximately $820,000 in health care equipment and infrastructure.

In the coming days, officials with the Department of Advanced Education and Skills are leading a delegation to participate in Working International Expo skills recruitment fairs in London, England, and Dublin, Ireland.

Finance

More than 43,000 seniors in the province began receiving an enhanced low income seniors’ benefit this week. With the October 2015 payment, the maximum payment seniors may receive will be $1,059 for seniors with a net income of up to $29,284.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, and the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General, today announced that Judge Michael A. Madden has been appointed as Associate Chief Judge with the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. Judge Madden's appointment is effective as of today (October 8, 2015).

Residents in the Isles of Notre Dame will benefit from an investment of approximately $570,000 in health care equipment and infrastructure.
