Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will bring greetings to the Fédération Nationale des Conseils Scolaires Francophones Annual Conference. The event will take place tomorrow (Friday, October 30) at The Delta Hotel and Conference Centre, 120 Gower Street, St. John's, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Enhancements to the 10-year child care strategy, Caring For Our Future, will further address and strengthen the quality, sufficiency and affordability of the child care system in this province. The improvements announced today include changes to the Operating Grant Program, equipment grant funding and the Early Learning and Child Care Supplement for Early Childhood Educators (ECE) in regulated Family Child Care homes.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will address a workshop hosted by the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador entitled Practical Tools Workshop for Families and Healthcare Professionals. The workshop will take place tomorrow (Friday, October 30) at the the Jack Byrne Regional Sports and Entertainment Centre, 7 Kennedy's Brook Drive in Torbay. Minister Kent will speak at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Signage depicting the new name of the CBS Bypass - Peacekeepers Way - was unveiled today at an event held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Conception Bay South. The name was chosen in partnership with the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will make a funding announcement in support of tourism and culture tomorrow (Friday, October 30). The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre in Conception Bay South.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Provincial Government is developing a 10-year strategy to end homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador, with several initiatives already underway. Work on the strategy is being informed by recommendations contained in an independent consultant's report entitled A Roadmap for Ending Homelessness in Newfoundland and Labrador, prepared by Orgcode Consulting Inc., and released earlier this year.

Their Honours, the Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Patricia Fagan will be giving out treats to Trick or Treating children at Government House on Saturday, October 31, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Justice and Public Safety

Inmates and Correctional Officers at the Bishops Falls Correctional Facility (BFCC) have partnered with the Lions Clubs of Newfoundland and Labrador to establish a satellite eyeglass recycling depot at the facility. This initiative will result in refurbished eyeglasses being used for overseas vision mission work.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development: Sport Newfoundland and Labrador

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association (NLVA) will be hosting the Beresford Ltd. VolleyFest 2015 in St. John's and vicinity from Friday, October 30 to Saturday, October 31. The tournament will take place on 31 courts in St. John's and vicinity with the primary venues in the NL Sports Centre for junior high divisions and Memorial University's Field House for senior high divisions. Both venues house between five and six courts.

Health and Community Services

The Provincial Government has received the evaluation results of the Enhanced Care in Personal Care Homes Pilot Project and is working with the personal home sector and the regional health authorities to explore options to expand the program. The pilot project allows personal care homes to provide care to residents who require a higher level of care than is normally provided in a personal care home.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General are expressing condolences on the recent passing of former Supreme Court Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador James Gushue. Justice Gushue passed away on October 25.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will be available to the media this afternoon (Thursday, October 29) to respond to the release of the Operational Improvement Review of Paramedicine and Medical Transport. Minister Kent will be joined by David Diamond, President and CEO, Eastern Health; and Corey Banks, Director and Chief of Paramedicine and Medical Transport, Eastern Health.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced a $30 million investment in four significant community initiatives. The funding was provided through amendments made by the Provincial Government to the Voisey's Bay Development Agreement, which included a $30 million commitment for community initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development: The Rooms Corporation

On Thursday morning, The Rooms launched the Remember Them at The Rooms public campaign to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel and Newfoundland and Labrador's involvement in the First World War. General Rick Hillier and Tom Foran, co-chairs of The Rooms First World War Capital Campaign, and Dean Brinton, CEO of The Rooms Corporation, Newfoundland and Labrador, unveiled the Where Once They Stood We Stand donor acknowledgement wall, recognizing the major contributors to the capital campaign to date.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, today congratulated this year’s recipients of Commissions and Exemplary Service Bars and Medals for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and Corrections. The awards were presented on October 27 and 28 at ceremonies hosted by the Honourable Frank Fagan, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador .

The Provincial Government today released a framework designed to build upon existing initiatives to tackle climate change and improve energy efficiency. The Market Transformation Framework will support better access to energy efficient and lower greenhouse gas emitting goods and services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
