Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development: The Rooms Corporation

The Rooms Corporation will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Sunday, June 28, starting at 12:00 p.m. The public is invited to an old-fashioned kitchen party featuring the band Wabana, along with traditional musicians Bob Taylor, Carl Peters and Larry Foley. Admission is free.

Executive Council

The Provincial Government has been informed by Desjardins Financial Security, the current insurance provider for the public service, of the early closure of their Corner Brook office. The company has stated that the office will close June 30, 2015.

Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government has called the tender for upgrades to roads in the areas of Jean de Baie, Burin and Marystown, as well as several other locations on the Burin Peninsula.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will bring greetings at the opening reception of the 14th International MATE Centre (Marine Advanced Technology Education) remote operated vehicle (ROV) competition.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has awarded two contracts valued at more than $182,000 to upgrade nine social housing homes in the Burin Peninsula towns of Marystown and Burin.

Transportation and Works

The tender for enhancements to the Bell Island wharf has closed. Improvements to the wharf are being made in preparation for the arrival of the new 80-metre ice class ferry, the MV Legionnaire in February 2016.

In support of innovation and new learning experiences for youth, up to $400,000 in funding will be provided to 37 schools and organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The Youth Innovation initiative helps create awareness of the value of innovation in the province’s high-growth resource and non-resource based industries. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Cultural and Rural Development, made the announcement this morning at St. Bernard’s Elementary in Witless Bay. He was joined by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and MHA for Ferryland.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today released Live Here, Work Here, Belong Here, A Population Growth Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, 2015-2025. The strategy is a government-wide approach for supporting individuals and families who choose Newfoundland and Labrador as their home. Through four five-year action plans focused on workforce, families, communities and immigration, the strategy will highlight everything that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.

The Provincial Government has provided 22 regional visitor information centres throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with a total of $143,500 in operational support through the Visitor Information Centre Program.

Recognizing a commitment to community and personal development, the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, presented 37 young people with the Bronze Standard of Achievement yesterday (Tuesday, June 23) to mark their successful participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program. The ceremony was held at the Confederation Building in St. John's.

The spring sitting of the House of Assembly concluded yesterday with several new acts and amendments being passed, most notably regarding protection of privacy, teachers' pension sustainability and changes to the House of Assembly Act.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, joined his federal, territorial and provincial counterparts at the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) meeting, which concluded yesterday afternoon in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Three groups of students province-wide will receive iPads for themselves and their schools by proving they’re HotShots at energy efficiency and conservation. The Honourable Dan Crummell, in his capacity as Minister Responsible for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, today announced that students from Menihek High School in Labrador City, St. Paul’s Junior High in St. John’s, and Xavier Junior High School in Deer Lake are winners of the HotShots contest for students. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will officially launch the provincial Population Growth Strategy tomorrow (Thursday, June 25). The event will commence at 10:30 a.m. at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre in Conception Bay South.

A new campaign aimed at redeveloping a centre in support of therapeutic riding programs that help children and youth with disabilities explore their abilities was launched today in St. John’s by Rainbow Riders. The Provincial Government is investing $250,000 in the campaign, Raise It Up.
