Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development: Research and Development Corporation

Nineteen students at Memorial University were presented with Ocean Industries Student Research Awards (OISRA) at a ceremony today at Memorial University. The awards program, delivered through the Research & Development Corporation (RDC), supports the development of highly qualified researchers exploring areas relevant to Newfoundland and Labrador’s ocean industries including offshore petroleum engineering, ocean technology, marine transportation, and fisheries and aquaculture.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for Research & Development Corporation (RDC), will attend a reception honouring the 2015-16 recipients of RDC’s Ocean Industries Student Research Awards on Monday, March 7. The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, St. John’s Campus, Memorial University.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will join provincial seafood producers and other industry players at the Seafood Expo North America in Boston which takes place from Sunday, March 6, to Tuesday, March 8. Seafood Expo North America is the largest seafood trade event in North America attracting over 20,000 buyers and suppliers from more than 100 countries.

The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Conception Bay South Town Hall, 11 Remembrance Square, Conception Bay South.

Transportation and Works

Motorists are advised that the Route 2 ramp from Conception Bay South to the Trans Canada Highway westbound will close at 11:00 a.m. for approximately one hour to repair a shoulder washout.

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will address participants at the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union’s (FFAW-Unifor) Rally to Stand Up for Adjacency, seeking fairness in the sharing of the Northern Shrimp resource, today (Thursday, March 3). Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at an event hosted by the Pharmacists’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to recognize Pharmacist Awareness Month. The event will take place tomorrow (Thursday, March 3) at 5:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites, St. John’s. Mr. Davis will speak at approximately 6:00 p.m.
