Maintaining Sound Financial Regulation Through the Superintendent Role

A number of superintendent roles exist in the Consumer and Commercial Affairs Division of Service NL. The role of Superintendent of Real Estate Agents and Salespersons is filled by an individual who is hired through a competitive process to fulfill the public service role of Director of Financial Services Regulation. Contrary to an article recently published by The Telegram, this role is not a political appointment.

This decision arose due to the sharp increase in inmate numbers at the Newfoundland and Labrador Correctional Centre for Women in Clarenville in recent weeks.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s All-Party Committee on Northern Shrimp Allocations will reconvene to discuss next steps in response to a new science report from the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) that indicates a significant reduction in the Northern shrimp stock in SFA 6 over the past year. Based on these reports, the Federal Government’s “last in, first out” (LIFO) policy relating to Northern Shrimp allocation decisions will continue to have a devastating effect on the province’s economy, particularly in rural regions.
