Mr. Speaker, I am very pleased to rise in this Honourable House today to announce that a new safe prescribing course is being developed for health professionals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Justice and Public Safety

There will be a presentation of certificates for the participants of the Women in Leadership Law Enforcement Program today (Thursday, May 19). The presentation will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Memorial Campus at Fort Townshend in St.John's.

Transportation and Works

Through a cost-shared funding agreement between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada, a tender has been called for rehabilitation of the Trans-Canada Highway between Route 340 at Lewisporte Junction to Route 360 at Bay d'Espoir Junction.

The Provincial Government is cautioning motorists to be vigilant and to watch out for moose when driving on the province's roadways. Most of the provincial highway system runs through moose habitat. While accidents are reported year round, more than 70 per cent occur between May and October.

Mr. Speaker, it was an honour for me this morning to have an opportunity to speak at the International Police and Peace Officer Memorial Service at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. John’s.

Natural Resources

The application process is now underway for the Prospectors Training Course being offered by the Provincial Government and College of the North Atlantic. The course takes place at Bay St. George campus in Stephenville from May 30 to June 10, and the deadline for applications is Monday, May 23. Applicants who are 19 years of age or older with an interest in prospecting, geology, or in becoming a mineral exploration professional are encouraged to apply.

Service NL

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for Workplace NL, will address attendees at the 60th annual Health and Safety Conference closing dinner tomorrow (Thursday, May 19). The event is hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Association, and will take place at the Hotel Gander at 7:00 p.m.

With the unofficial launch to summer just around the corner, the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency is encouraging residents to be diligent with open fires during the Victoria Day long weekend.

Environment and Conservation

The results of a recent census of five caribou herds on the south coast of Newfoundland show the island’s caribou population continues to decline but numbers remain healthy, at just under 32,000 animals.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will participate in the International Police and Peace Officer Memorial Service being held tomorrow (Wednesday, May 18). The service begins at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John's Seventh Day Adventist Church, 30 Aldershot Street.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, will deliver the keynote address at a seminar hosted by the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships and the St. John's Board of Trade tomorrow (Wednesday, May 18).

Residents in Goulds are advised that conservation officers have confirmed the presence of coyotes in the Riverside Drive area and are taking appropriate action. Officers will continue to monitor the area.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to highlight our government’s support for mineral prospectors in this province and to inform residents of ongoing registration for the upcoming Prospectors Training Course.

Executive Council

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to speak about the recent Council of Atlantic Premiers meeting which took place on May 16 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia.

Justice and Public Safety

The Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission commemorates the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), held annually on May 17. IDAHOT is the largest LGBTQ solidarity event to take place throughout the globe, with over 1,000 events taking place in more than 120 countries worldwide to draw attention to violence and discrimination still experienced by LGBTQ people. This year, the focus of the day is on mental health and well-being.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will join Federal Government representatives, along with Canadian seal and fur industries, tomorrow (Tuesday, May 17) for Seal Day on the Hill events in Ottawa. These events highlight seal products and provide an opportunity for governments to demonstrate their support for the Canadian sealing industry.
