A targeted stakeholder engagement roundtable session with the province’s arts sector organizations and professional artists is being held today (Thursday, January 12) in St. John’s.

Today, the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), announced the launch of province-wide community stakeholder consultations to review the corporation's programs and services.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will join Nick Whelan, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East, for the launch of the Community Sector Council of Newfoundland and Labrador’s financial management pilot project tomorrow (Wednesday, January 11). The event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Sector Council office, 25 Anderson Avenue, St. John's.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Provincial Government has issued a public tender associated with the Power Engineering Shop Enhancement project at the Corner Brook Campus of College of the North Atlantic. The tender is for the supply of Major Boiler System equipment for instructional purposes, as part of the college's Centre for Energy and Thermal Systems.

Natural Resources

Today, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, welcomed the seventh new entrant to the province's offshore oil and gas industry in just over a year.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and MHA for Burgeo-La Poile, and officials of Service NL and Municipal Affairs met with Mayor Clyde Dominie and the Town Council of Ramea, via teleconference Thursday. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an update on work being undertaken to improve water quality in the community following a recent storm surge which resulted in salt water getting into the town’s water supply.

The Department of Municipal Affairs is reminding residents of the approaching deadline for residents and communities to apply for assistance following the Thanksgiving Day rainstorm that affected parts of the province in October 2016.

Motorists are advised that the Trans-Canada Highway near Salmonier Line remains on schedule to reopen to traffic on Saturday, January 7, following a successful day on site. Two new culverts are now in place and crews are beginning to back fill the site. The contractor will once again work throughout the night.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, is congratulating Dr. Mary Bluechardt as she moves on to the role of President of Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Bluechardt had served for the past five years as the Vice-President, Grenfell Campus of Memorial University.

Province-wide stakeholder engagement sessions, hosted by the department in collaboration with the Research & Development Corporation, have now been completed.

A pilot project was launched today which will enable Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who harvest wood in a number of districts to renew their own personal Domestic Cutting Permits online.
