The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, will address the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Association's 2016 Annual Conference tomorrow (Friday, February 5), at the Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook. Minister Hawkins will bring greetings at 7:30 a.m. during the breakfast session.

Executive Council

Premier Brian Gallant will host a meeting of Atlantic Premiers and members of the Federal Cabinet representing Atlantic Canada in Fredericton on February 10, 2016. Premier Gallant will be joined by his colleagues Premier Dwight Ball of Newfoundland and Labrador, Premier Stephen McNeil of Nova Scotia, and Premier Wade MacLauchlan of Prince Edward Island. Premiers are pleased to welcome Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons; Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement; Honourable Scott Brison, President of the federal Treasury Board; Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food; and Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, to this unprecedented meeting of Atlantic premiers and federal ministers.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will provide the keynote address at the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industries Association (Noia) Annual General Meeting tomorrow (Thursday, February 4). The meeting will take place at the Delta St. John’s Hotel in the Harbourview room. The minister will speak at approximately 1:00 p.m.

The Department of Transportation and Works advises that the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor began providing passenger and vehicle service to travellers to Fogo Island and Change Islands at approximately 7:00 a.m. today (Wednesday, February 3), while repairs to the MV Veteran are ongoing.

Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers of the Department of Justice and Public Safety had a particularly busy year in 2015 in their efforts to ensure that people in Newfoundland and Labrador enjoyed the province’s natural resources in a safe and legal manner. Also during 2015, officers continued to be engaged in community events such as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Special Olympics, numerous Christmas parades and toy drives, community cleanups, and frequent visits and presentations to schools, youth and user groups.

The Department of Transportation and Works advises that contingency air services are in place for ferry users of Fogo Island and Change Islands while repairs are carried out to the MV Veteran. The vessel experienced a mechanical issue yesterday morning (Monday, February 1). The timeline for completion of the repair work is still being determined.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will attend the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Annual General Meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2). The event begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Carnell Building, 13 Pippy Place, St. John’s.

Since its launch on January 12, thousands of residents have been sharing their thoughts, ideas and solutions as part of the Government Renewal Initiative. Far surpassing previous budget engagement activities in the province, over 240 people have attended sessions in Rocky Harbour, Corner Brook and St. John’s; and many more people are expected at upcoming sessions throughout the province over the next couple of weeks. To date, over 1,100 ideas from individuals have been provided through the online Dialogue App.

This afternoon, the Honourable Brian Tobin, PC, OC, former Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Vice-Chair, BMO Capital Markets, and Victor Pellegrino, Senior Vice-President, Atlantic Provinces Division, BMO Bank of Montreal, presented a major donation of $1,000,000 towards The Rooms Where Once They Stood We Stand Capital Campaign for First World War Commemoration.
