Finance

The Provincial Government today provided an update on the status of collective bargaining with the Newfoundland and Labrador Union of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Since November 2016, government has met with 14 NAPE groups and five CUPE groups. While the parties have met multiple times and been able to make progress on some issues, there has been little or no movement on outstanding proposals with financial implications. Government is seeking the assistance of conciliation for six of the NAPE bargaining groups and one of the CUPE bargaining groups in an attempt to find a resolution.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is taking important steps toward improving public safety by introducing amendments to the Highway Traffic Act to strengthen impaired driving laws.

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will provide an update on the status of collective bargaining at 1:00 p.m. today (Thursday, March 2) in the Media Centre, East Block, Confederation Building.

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will address attendees at the Newfoundland and Labrador Fish Harvesting Safety Association AGM tomorrow (Thursday, March 2), 12:00 p.m. at the Comfort Inn Airport, St. John's.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Service NL, will announce details regarding proposed changes to the Highway Traffic Act designed to reduce impaired driving. Minister Trimper will be joined by Patricia Hynes-Coates, National President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, together with the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s, will present a new fire truck today (Wednesday, March 1) at 7:00 p.m. at the Placentia Fire Hall, 18 Larkin Drive, Placentia.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in this Honourable House to recognize March as Fraud Prevention Month in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to offer condolences to the family and friends of James McGrath – former Member of the House of Assembly, Member of Parliament, federal Cabinet minister and Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. To honour him, flags at Provincial Government buildings will be lowered to half-mast until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Amendments to the Financial Administration Act for Public Accounts received second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday. These amendments include the tabling of public accounts on or before October 31 of the following fiscal year. During the years where the fixed date provincial general election occurs, the Public Accounts will be issued no less than 15 days before the date of the election.

March is National Nutrition Month and the theme of this year’s campaign is “Take the fight out of food. Spot the problem. Get the facts. Seek support.”
