Health and Community Services

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to recognize June as Stroke Awareness Month in Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada. During the month, residents throughout the province are encouraged to learn more about how to prevent heart disease and reduce the risk of stroke.

Executive Council

Mr. Speaker, on June 4, 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Moncton, New Brunswick, which resulted in the deaths of three members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and injuries to two others.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will participate in a Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union rally for fair fisheries management policies at the Smallwood Building in Corner Brook tomorrow (Thursday, June 4). The rally is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the Association of Allied Health Professionals (AAHP) Biennial General Meeting tomorrow (Thursday, June 4).

Child, Youth and Family Services

The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, will provide a keynote address during the Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon tomorrow (Thursday, June 4). The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at The Inn at Happy Adventure, Eastport.

Tracey Perry, Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) launch of Supplier Diversity NL.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will address the provincial Kids Eat Smart Partner Breakfast tomorrow (Thursday, June 4) at St. Paul’s Junior High, Newfoundland Drive, in St. John’s. The event begins at 8:15 a.m.

Service NL

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to emphasize the importance of promoting occupational health and safety particularly as construction activity and other seasonal work increases during the summer months. Preventing accidents and illness in workplaces throughout the province is part of the mandate of Service NL, and we remain dedicated to working with employers to promote the well-being of workers year-round.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to note that June is Recreation Month in Newfoundland and Labrador, a time to highlight how active, healthy living enhances the quality of our lives.

Justice and Public Safety

Mr. Speaker, on May 29, Newfoundland and Labrador Crime Stoppers announced the recipients of the 2015 Police and Peace Officer of the Year Awards. This marked the 21st annual event that recognizes officers for their professionalism and for the contributions they make to their communities.

A recent investigation by Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officers into the validity of a hunting licence has led to convictions for two men.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

The province’s new access and privacy legislation, the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (ATIPPA, 2015) came into force this week. As the Office tasked with oversight of this new Act, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) is committed to working with citizens and public bodies to ensure that the law delivers on its promise of better access to information and protection of privacy.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works will undertake a clean up of the Outer Ring Road between Logy Bay Road and Portugal Cove Road on Sunday, June 14. To facilitate the clean up efforts and to ensure the safety of workers and motorists, the road will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on June 14. Motorists are advised that barricades will be erected the morning of the clean up.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

May 31 through June 6 marks Tourism Week across Canada, an opportunity to celebrate the tremendous social and economic value of the country’s tourism sector. During the week, national and provincial tourism industry leaders showcase the economic impact and social benefits of the tourism and travel sector.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will address members of the Northeast Avalon Rotary Club tomorrow (Wednesday, June 3) at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, 7 Conception Bay Highway, Conception Bay South.

The Provincial Government is following the lead of the Federal Government and removing the provincial portion of tax on feminine hygiene products.
