Provincial Government Issues Request for Expressions of Interest for Marine Ferry Services

A Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) is being issued by the Provincial Government to explore options for the delivery of ferry services on the south coast of the island portion of the province and the south coast of Labrador. The REOI calls for the management of the ferry services under a single contract.

Representatives from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, including the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, participated in the 24th annual Nunavut Conference and Trade show this week in Iqaluit, building on the spirit of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nunavut. Minister Hutchings also had the pleasure of meeting with the Honourable Peter Taptuna, Premier of Nunavut, during the conference.

Online Campsite Reservation Service has Successful First Season

A new campsite reservation service launched in April has had a highly successful first season, seeing a 20 per cent increase in usage over 2014. The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, released the latest statistics today showing that the online service, which allows users to create a user profile, and includes other new features, was well received.

Public Advisory: MV Northern Ranger to Accept Personal Freight at Cartwright

Effective Friday, September 25, residents of Cartwright and the north coast of Labrador will have the option to ship personal freight between Cartwright and the north coast via the MV Northern Ranger. The service is being provided subject to availability of space and on a first come, first serve basis. Personal shipments are not to exceed freight larger than items such as ATVs and snowmobiles. Commercial or business freight will not be accepted.

Road repairs, paving, asphalt levelling, bridge replacements and wharf upgrades are currently underway as part of three contracts awarded by the Provincial Government valued at over $2.7 million. The contracts were awarded last month and work is ongoing. All three will be completed this construction season.

The design for a new Campia Gymnastics regional facility was unveiled today in Mount Pearl. The facility is being cost-shared between the Provincial Government and the City of Mount Pearl through an investment of over $1.9 million. Pharmacists Begin Prescribing for Minor Ailments

New regulations under the Pharmacy Act, 2012 allow pharmacists in Newfoundland and Labrador to prescribe and treat a number of minor ailments, such as nausea, cold sores, hemorrhoids and eczema. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, who was joined by members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board, the Pharmacists' Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, and other community stakeholders.

Trans Canada Highway from St. John’s to Salmonier Line to Undergo $5.7 million in Repairs

The Provincial Government has awarded a contract valued at over $5.7 million for rut repairs on various sections of the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) from St. John’s to Salmonier Line. The contract, awarded to Farrell’s Excavating Ltd., is in addition to $6.8 million in road upgrades already underway from Salmonier Line to Whitbourne.
