Municipal Affairs

Over $150 million in cost-shared municipal funding has been made available to communities in Newfoundland and Labrador to support water, wastewater and public transit systems, as the result of an agreement to implement the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund in the province. The Federal Government is contributing a total of $75 million; the Provincial Government is contributing $44 million, and the remainder will be provided by the recipient municipalities.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will hold a media availability today (Thursday, July 7) to discuss the federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard’s decision on Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) policy for the Northern Shrimp fishery.

Advanced Education and Skills

Today, the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, and the Honourable John McCallum, federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, signed the first-ever Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Immigration Agreement. The agreement helps strengthen the partnership between the two levels of government to encourage immigration to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski will host Canada’s 13 provincial and territorial premiers and the leaders of the five National Aboriginal Organizations in Haines Junction, Yukon, on July 20. The meeting will take place on the Traditional Territory of Yukon's Champagne and Aishihik First Nations.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will join the Honourable Judy Foote, federal Minister of Public Services and Procurement on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, to announce significant federal and provincial investment in the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund tomorrow (Thursday, July 7) at the Bay Roberts Hotel, 72-76 Water Street, Bay Roberts. The event begins at 1:00 p.m.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will be in Toronto July 7-8, for the 105th meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC).

Lighthouse Productions, presenters of the Grand Bank Theatre Festival, has received $40,000 in operational funding through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program.

Advanced Education and Skills

High school students will have the opportunity to gain work experience this summer with 2,800 weeks of available employment. This will create 469 jobs supported through the Student Summer Employment Program – High School and made possible via $780,000 in funding. This program allows non-profit organizations throughout the province to avail of a wage subsidy to assist with the hiring of high school students for the summer.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

Seven research projects that focus on healthy aging have received a total of $87,500 through the Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy Aging Research Program. The program provides support for a wide range of research related to the utilization of health care services, chronic pain and health care education for seniors.

Transportation and Works

Repairs to the port stern thruster of the MV Veteran have been completed and the vessel will return to service tomorrow at Fogo Island - Change Islands - Farewell. The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Damen Shipyards provided information today regarding the repairs undertaken to address issues with the vessel’s propulsion system.
