Legislative amendments to the Highway Traffic Act will undergo second reading in the House of Assembly today to enhance the enforcement of laws to prevent the illegal passing of school buses, as well as speeding infractions in school or construction zones. Fines for passing a school bus stopped with its red lights flashing are also being increased.

The Provincial Government today introduced legislative amendments in the House of Assembly to eliminate the practice of paying parliamentary secretaries and the parliamentary assistant to the Premier and to no longer limit the number of parliamentary secretaries to four.

Residents are reminded that forest fire regulations are in effect and are being enforced following the start of Forest Fire Season which began May 1 on the island portion of the province and begins May 15 in Labrador. To date, 18 human-caused forest fires have occurred and required response from the Forestry Services Branch.

OHS Charges Arise Involving Hazardous Workplace

The Eastern Regional Health Authority, a supervisor, and two workers have been charged with violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Asbestos Abatement Regulations in relation to an incident that occurred in May of 2014. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of Service NL.
