Education

Site work has begun in preparation for the construction of a new school to replace Virginia Park Elementary following the recent award of a tender, valued at over $3.3 million, to Marco Services Ltd. of St. John’s. This is the first of two tenders expected to be issued within the year, with the second to include the construction of the building itself.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, today announced that the Provincial Government will establish a panel to undertake an independent review of hydraulic fracturing in western Newfoundland. The panel will be provided with a terms of reference to share information and receive input from the public on hydraulic fracturing.

Justice

Over the past several weeks, officers with the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division have charged 17 people with offences related to the alleged illegal fishing of Atlantic salmon and trout in various regions of the province.

Environment and Conservation: Multi-Materials Stewardship Board

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), will announce recipients of the 2014-15 Solid Waste Management Innovation Fund tomorrow (Tuesday, August 12).

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister Responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, will announce an investment in supportive housing for persons with complex needs tomorrow (Tuesday, August 12). The event will take place at The Salvation Army, 37 Churchill Street, in Happy Valley-Goose Bay at 11:00 a.m.

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, will be joined by the Honourable Gerry Ritz, federal Agriculture Minister, to provide an update on funding investments under Growing Forward 2, tomorrow (Tuesday, August 12). Robert Walsh, owner/operator of Glenview Dairy Farms, and Eugene Legge, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture, will also be in attendance. The event will take place at Glenview Dairy Farms in Kilbride at 10:00 a.m.

Advanced Education and Skills: Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has awarded a contract valued at $150,000 to Pine Martin Adventures Inc. to install a new fire sprinkler system at the Forestside Manor in Corner Brook.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Tony Cornect, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be in Stephenville on Sunday, August 10 to attend the closing of the 36th annual Stephenville Theatre Festival. The event takes place at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, will represent the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and lay a wreath on behalf of the Provincial Government tomorrow (Saturday, August 9).

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits, at the fire hall in the Town of Botwood today to announce a new fire truck for the community as well as fire equipment for communities throughout the district.

The Provincial Government today announced that a contract has been awarded to Power Advisory LLC for the independent review of the electricity system in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Tourism, Culture and Recreation

Beginning today, lively and beautiful folk music can be heard in Bowering Park and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike with the official opening of the 38th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival. The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society has received $25,000 through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program to help offset festival production costs.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Provincial Government is joining with the towns of Bishop’s Falls, Northern Arm and Point Leamington to provide approximately $1.5 million in cost-shared funding for important infrastructure projects in the region.

Finance

In an effort to process payments in a more cost-effective manner and to reduce the costs associated with cheque processing, the Provincial Government will increase its use of direct deposit and will phase out government-issued cheques by December 31, 2016.

As the result of a sub-tropical air mass that moved over the island portion of the province ahead of post-tropical storm Bertha, Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) advises residents of the high potential for very heavy rain over the next 24 to 48 hours.
