Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded a $128,000 contract to Eastern Sheet Metal Works Ltd. to upgrade heating systems in five St. John’s buildings containing 30 social housing units.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that the RNC Corner Brook Detachment will continue call relay and verification services for the volunteer fire departments in the City of Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands region.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will speak at the New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Corner Brook, which will launch the city’s 60th anniversary celebrations, today (Thursday, December 31). The event takes place at the Corner Brook Civic Centre Annex beginning at 8:00 p.m.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety today issued the following statement in relation to a conviction at Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in Port aux Choix for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act associated with the death of a Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officer in February 2013:

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation has awarded a $167,000 contract to G.S. Hunt Enterprises Ltd. to provide roofing upgrades on two buildings containing 20 social housing units on Topsail Road in Mount Pearl.

The MV Veteran is currently experiencing a mechanical issue with one of its bow thrusters. As a result, and once weather conditions permit, the MV Norcon Galatea will sail to the area to provide assistance. The MV Norcon Galatea is currently located in the nearby Town of Carmanville.

The Department of Transportation and Works advises Labrador ferry users of an update to the previously announced date for the alternate ferry schedule and temporary air service for January 2016. The MV Apollo will now depart the following week for required maintenance, docking on January 10. This shift in date is due to a change in the availability of the dockyard to perform the work.

The Terra Nova Bridge in the T'Railway Provincial Park remains unsafe and is closed to all users. Unfortunately, vandals have removed the barricades and signage on the bridge informing the public of the closure. While the department attempts to replace these safety mechanisms as soon as possible, the public is reminded that the bridge is unsafe to use.

Today the Provincial Government announced immediate actions to begin to address the difficult fiscal reality the province is facing. These measures include a comprehensive review of the Muskrat Falls project as well as adjustments in hiring, discretionary spending, re-allocation of savings, use of consultants and travel.

Addressing the new fiscal reality facing Newfoundland and Labrador is the top priority for the Provincial Government. Today the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, released the province’s 2015-16 Fiscal and Economic Update. The projected deficit has been revised to $1.96 billion, an increase of $869.5 million over the Budget 2015-16 projection of $1.093 billion.
