Statement from Minister McPhee on World Pneumonia Day

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

"The Yukon stands with the global community to mark World Pneumonia Day, observed every year on November 12. Across the world, pneumonia is one of the leading infections of children and adults – and Canada is no exception.

“Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and other kinds of exposure. Early treatment can save lives. We can prevent it with some vaccines and treat it based on the cause.

Test of AlertReady emergency messaging system planned for November 15

The Emergency Measures Organization will be issuing a test of the AlertReady system at approximately 1:55 pm (Yukon time) on Wednesday, November 15.

The test will be broadcast on cellphones, radio and televisions across the Yukon. Regular testing of the emergency alerting system is important to ensure that critical information can be issued to Yukoners during an emergency.

This test is also an important reminder to have an emergency plan and an emergency kit for your family or household. Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.

“Today marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the first-year anniversary of the Centre de Santé Constellation Health Centre. This health care facility, which began its journey in the Nuvo Building at 102-4149 4th Avenue, has since transitioned to its permanent home at 9010 Quartz Road in Whitehorse.

The Government of Yukon commemorates veterans this November by recognizing Veterans’ Week, National Indigenous Veterans’ Day and Remembrance Day.

Veterans' Week, which takes place this year from November 5 to 11, acknowledges the commitment and service of those who enlisted in the armed forces. During Veterans’ Week, the Yukon government pays tribute to the more than 300 veterans who have chosen the Yukon as their home.

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn has issued the following statement: 
 

“November 1 to 7 is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in Canada. Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a poisonous, odourless and colourless gas. It is produced by burning fuels like gas, kerosene, propane and wood.

“At-home risks for carbon monoxide include heating and cooking equipment; cars and generators running in attached garages; and blocked chimneys or vents. Your house, garage, or cabin can quickly fill up with enough CO to hurt you.

Premier Pillai participates in Council of the Federation meeting in Halifax

On November 5 and 6, Premier Ranj Pillai joined Canada’s Premiers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a Council of the Federation meeting and Health Summit.

Premier Pillai raised the Government of Yukon’s perspectives and interests on common priorities including housing, infrastructure and health care. Premier Pillai also highlighted innovative work being undertaken in collaboration with Yukon First Nations and health system partners to advance Health and Wellness Yukon/Santé et mieux-être Yukon/ Shäw Kwä’a, the Yukon’s new health authority.

Ryder Apartment building remediation and demolition has started

The Government of Yukon is committed to creating housing options that are accessible and reflective of the diverse needs of all Yukoners.

As part of this commitment, the Government of Yukon has awarded $515,000 in funding to Castle Rock Enterprises, to support remediation of the Ryder Apartment building in Whitehorse. Castle Rock Enterprises is owned by Dakwakada Capital Investments, the business arm of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation.

What We Heard report available for Whitehorse schools capital planning engagement

The Government of Yukon has released a report on the input received for Whitehorse school capital planning.

In spring 2023, the Government of Yukon collected feedback from Yukoners on their ideas, considerations and needs about building, upgrading and renovating Whitehorse-area schools. The engagement period ran for just over 60 days and ended in May 2023. During that time Yukoners were asked to provide feedback via an online survey, written submissions, targeted presentations, focus groups and public open houses held across Whitehorse.
