Minister Announces Independent Panel for Review of Hydraulic Fracturing

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, has appointed an independent panel of five individuals to conduct a review of the socio-economic and environmental implications of hydraulic fracturing in western Newfoundland.
Third Phase of Alarmed and Ready Campaign Delivers Message of Fire Safety

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the launch of Phase Three of the Alarmed and Ready Challenge for the province. This fire prevention and public awareness campaign is made possible through a partnership involving the Provincial Government, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services.
Pilot Program Encourages Students to Save Energy

HotShots, a pilot project designed to improve students’ awareness of energy and conservation, was launched today at C.C. Loughlin Elementary in Corner Brook. This project, which includes a Provincial Government investment of $200,000 over two years, is a joint initiative between the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
Over $367,000 in Funding Supports Economic Diversity in the Corner Brook Region

A Provincial Government investment of $367,912 will help enable seven companies based in the Corner Brook region build stronger and more dynamic communities and enhance their local economies. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, toured Quality Cabinetry and Carpentry and Headline Holsteins Ltd., two of the funding recipients, while in the region this week.
Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner – Sentence Handed Down in Personal Health Information Act Matter

On October 9, 2014, Provincial Court Judge Gregory Brown handed down a fine of $1,000 in relation to a finding of guilt against Colleen Stamp (formerly Colleen Weeks). Ms. Stamp had been found guilty by Judge Brown on September 30 of an offence under section 88(1) of the Personal Health Information Act, also known as PHIA [pronounced "fee-ah"]. Judge Brown found that Ms. Stamp, a nurse formerly employed by Eastern Health, had inappropriately accessed the personal health information of patients who were not under her care.

The project aims to improve students’ awareness of energy efficiency and conservation and encourage them to be agents of change in their own environment.

Province Supports the Trading Books for Boats Initiative

Junior High students from the Corner Brook, Bay of Islands, and Humber Valley regions of the province are taking to the open water to learn about coastal and ocean ecosystems through the Trading Books for Boats initiative, a project developed by the Atlantic Coastal Action Program (ACAP) Humber Arm. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture provided $25,500 to ACAP Humber Arm this year for various initiatives, including Trading Books for Boats.
School Councils Day Focuses on Student Success

The Provincial Government is recognizing Thursday, October 9, as the second annual School Councils Day to formally acknowledge the contributions of school councils towards the enhancement of school programs and overall student achievement. School Councils Day is part of Education Week, which is being celebrated in Newfoundland and Labrador October 5-11.

Since its debut in 2010, the CBC television series Republic of Doyle, filmed exclusively in Newfoundland and Labrador, has experienced record-breaking ratings and positive reviews. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the season premiere last night at the St. John’s Convention Centre. This is the show’s sixth and final season.
