Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, will join representatives from the City of St. John’s for the official opening of the Southlands Community Centre tomorrow (Thursday, July 17). The event is taking place at the new community centre at 40 Teakwood Drive, and will get underway at 11:00 a.m.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

The Information and Privacy Commissioner, Ed Ring, has released his Report A-2014-008 under authority of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A summary of the Report is included below.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will announce funding for the provincial aquaculture industry tomorrow (Thursday, July 17) at 10:00 a.m. The announcement will take place at the Centre for Aquaculture Health and Development, located on Cormier Ave in St. Alban’s.

Justice

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Justice, today announced that James Carroll, Member of the Order of Merit (M.O.M.), has been appointed as Deputy Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary while Marlene Jesso has been promoted to Superintendent. Mr. Carroll fills a position that was left vacant when Bill Janes was appointed Chief of Police in February.

Education

Queen Elizabeth Regional High School in Conception Bay South will soon have new windows, following the recent award of a tender, valued at close to $524,000, to Eastern Contracting Ltd. of Mount Pearl.

Executive Council

In the coming weeks, the Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Office will conduct a survey of Labrador winter snowmobile trail users to identify opportunities to improve the Labrador Transportation Grooming Subsidy.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works is advising motorists that the Outer Ring Road between Portugal Cove Road and the Team Gushue Highway will be closed on Sunday, July 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The closure of five kilometres of highway is required to enable cleanup efforts.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Another community on the Coast of Bays will benefit from enhanced aquaculture infrastructure with the announcement of $4 million from the Provincial Government to construct an aquaculture inflow wharf in the community of Milltown. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced the funding today, which will develop the fourth inflow wharf in the region. These wharves are used exclusively by the aquaculture industry to reduce the possibility of cross contamination by other vessels.

Executive Council

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, met with his colleagues at the 38th Annual Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers (NEG/ECP) to discuss important issues affecting the region including collaboration on energy matters and cross jurisdictional trade and investment.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development

As a part of the Provincial Government’s commitment to providing leading edge telecommunications services and infrastructure, broadband coverage will be extended to an additional 5,086 households in 102 Newfoundland and Labrador communities. The Provincial Government will invest $4.6 million in this third phase of the Rural Broadband Initiative. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development.

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, will announce details of the next phase of the Rural Broadband Initiative tomorrow (Wednesday, July 16). Minister Sullivan will announce the successful proponents of the most recent call for proposals under the initiative and the communities that are part of the latest broadband projects.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, will announce funding for the aquaculture industry tomorrow (Wednesday, June 16) at 1:00 p.m. The announcement will take place at the Lions Club in the community of Milltown.

Education

CAN AM Platforms & Construction Ltd. of Shearstown has been awarded two tenders, with a combined value of more than $1.1 million, for modular classrooms at seven schools on the Northeast Avalon Peninsula.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

Key provincial aquaculture statistics which include production volumes, employment numbers, and inspection information are now available on a new page of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture website: www.fishaq.gov.nl.ca/aquaculture/publicreporting.html.

Health and Community Services

Clients of the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP) who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness will benefit from two new services that will be provided by pharmacists in the province. The new initiatives will provide one-on-one medication management services for clients 65 and older with multiple chronic diseases, and for clients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease who are starting a new medication for that illness.

Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The theatre festival season is well underway again this year with support of $280,000 through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program. The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, made the announcement at the opening of the Stephenville Theatre Festival this past weekend.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

On July 13-14 the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will attend the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers meeting in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire.
